1967 – The Beginning
MEI Sciage et Forage was founded by René St-Pierre, becoming the first company in Quebec to use diamond drilling technology. Operations began with reinforced concrete and pavement cutting using propane-powered saws.
1981 – Growth and Expansion
More than 200 kilometres of pavement were cut as part of major natural gas infrastructure projects. Diamond drilling operations expanded with the addition of new service units, quickly establishing MEI Sciage et Forage as a leader in street and infrastructure cutting.
Expansion
MEI acquired a Pellegrini wire saw, enabling the completion of major projects, including work at the Port of Trois-Rivières and the Beaumont Dam in La Tuque, with cutting depths reaching up to five feet.
As demand continued to grow, additional wire saws were added to the fleet. A Sherbrooke branch was opened to serve new markets, followed by the expansion into larger facilities in Trois-Rivières.
Innovation
MEI became the first company in Quebec to deploy multiple wire saws simultaneously for continuous 24-hour operations, including major projects at the La Tuque generating station.
The company also completed large-scale industrial mandates, including the dismantling of industrial structures for Irving Paper in New Brunswick. During this period, MEI further developed its expertise in diamond wire sawing and time-sensitive operations while expanding its capabilities with high-capacity floor saws for large structural cutting projects.
Major Projects
MEI participated in large industrial projects across Canada, including continuous wire sawing operations in Irving refineries and steel tank dismantling projects throughout Ontario.
Always Evolving
The company expanded its Trois-Rivières facilities to support continued growth and completed specialized projects across Canada, including industrial component cutting in Northwestern Canada and precision drilling projects in Nunavik.
Today, MEI remains a recognized leader in wire sawing and complex, schedule-driven projects. René St-Pierre continues to support the next generation through mentorship and knowledge sharing.
